The West Coast Hot Rod clubroom in Malaga played host to 846 of the hottest models and dioramas in WA. Among the groups was the scale dirt oval racers from Bunbury and some other RCs giving demo runs of various burnouts, drifts and mobility. This week, a continuation of the mysterious disappearing XSR cars.
A special car here, as Alan Barton's wheelstanding Cox Cheetah takes to the strip on it's only assault. An entertaining run rather than record pace, but we all loved it.
Down Under Aussie featured last week, and will also be in print again this week, but probably wishes it wasn't with this car. The '57 Bel Air C/FC never got the setup correct and was well off the pace.
Jason Hunter had great pride in match racing with other Doorslammers and dial-in racing with this Texaco Camaro. With it's massive Hemi V8 and rear wing, it was a looker. Eventually the car was taken apart and parts are still found on Jason's cars. 8/7/2006 - News Headlines 'The Comeback King' does it again
Jason Hunter has had his fair amount of 'offline' time recently. He sure made up for it this week, winning on a temporary return to racing with the X/Mod Hot Rod. View the race report on this site or a more detailed version is available here. Debut for two Chad Raven was enjoying the use of a backup race crew, his father Bronte and brother Jason, to race some of his cars. They shown everyone a clean set of heels when the rounds came together and made a welcome addition to the racing this week. Car rollover for Jason Jason Hunter was lucky to escape from a testing shunt with the X/Mod Hot Rod after the car dug into the glue at the startline. Flipping over after veering sideways, the car came to rest the right way and was only injured in the pride department. Rude awakening for Stardust Round 1 of racing saw a major incident with the Stardust Funny Car going into the cushion hard, then collected by a 300 gram bus at 30 mph. The backend needed Jason Farrell's attention but was still good for a semis finish. 5/7/2006 - Flashback Time once again to take stock of races from the past and remembering the cars that defined the past era of Xtreme Slotcar Raceway. This week, this segment is devoted to the cars that time forgot. Moving from a commercial premises to club level meant that changes made to the track setup and arrangements made much more impact than some of the cars racing previous to the move. These cars disappeared from the map permanently, never to stage up ever again.
Team Down Under Aussie was certainly a pair of Outlaws that ran hard in the era. Some promising times came from the cars, driven by Jack Snr and Jack Jnr, but on the whole weren't destined for silverware in the non-official class.
Although more well-known for solid performances in Monza Funny Cars (driving the red and blue Jungle Jim and the Hawaiian), Darran Rigney also had a car that was not so prominent in the Eliminators spotlight. The In-N-Out Burger Firebird appeared for a few events, it's whereabouts afterwards unknown.
Some fads never die out, but the Beretta craze was rare in that it never got off the ground racing despite two cars being painted and ready for events. The Petro Canada car was Jason Hunter at the helm whilst the purple and orange DHV car with Dave Hunter steering. Or so it should have been. Only the purple and orange car raced, but never made the 1.400 cut off time and was dropped not long after. The red and white car never raced and has been lost in the sands of time. Dave Hunter took home the final round with a win against Craig Britten's C/Gas. Mark's shaky Pontiac debut Best moments of racing don't necessarily mean winning, more sort of the moments that produced an exciting spectacle. Mark John has had some hairy runs in the '55 Bel Air and other hot rods, but nothing could compare to the first runs of his newly built Pontiac Firebird. First qualifying round in the race was it's first competitive pass. Well it should have been were it not for a loosely fitted left rear tyre. Immediately after launching, the car lost the wheel and promptly speared right before tipping gently on it's lid. It's second attempt at a first time also produced the wrong kind of result, as the wheelie bar broke after it's first pass. End result was a massive tyreshake which almost threw it off the track again. Happily though, the car survived all of this unscathed and everyone was relieved to see the beautiful red Pontiac live another day. Taylor throws down gauntlet in Valiant The John family was definitely wanting into this week's news, with Mark's son Taylor showing his real potential in the Valiant X/Mod. With his third run, his dial-in was n 0.910, in which he broke out for the loss with a dangerous 0.892. A car to watch in the future. New record for Australian Pro Bus The unique "Indonesian Express" gained another accolade in it's career, beating it's own personal best with a 1.294@37.03mph. |
